What is Eto Shogi: Ryoma?

Eto Shogi: Ryoma is a 6×6 shogi played with pieces for the 12 zodiac animals. Stack a captured piece on your own piece with the same kanji to make a 2-stack with more ways to move. Capture both the opponent's Dragon and Horse to win. For 2 players, about 20 minutes.

A 6×6 shogi played with pieces for the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. There is no fixed setup: arrange your 12 pieces however you like on your two nearest rows. The Dragon races any distance orthogonally and the Horse diagonally, while the other ten step one square forward. Capture a piece and stack it on your own piece with the same kanji to make a 2-stack that can move in many more directions. A piece entering the enemy zone flips into a Crown, but beware: if a captured piece is stacked onto it, it is demoted back to a 2-stack. Capture both the opponent's Dragon and Horse to win. And once 9 stacks have formed, the first to crown the last remaining kind wins by "try". 2 players, about 20 minutes, ages 8+.

1. Set up however you like

   Arrange your 12 zodiac pieces (Rat, Ox, Tiger and more) freely on your two nearest rows. Your strategy starts with the setup.

2. Stack captures into 2-stacks

   The Dragon races any distance orthogonally and the Horse diagonally, while the other ten step one square forward. Stack a captured piece on your own piece with the same kanji to make a 2-stack that can move in many more directions.

3. Capture the Dragon and the Horse

   Capture both the opponent's Dragon and Horse to win. A piece entering the enemy zone flips into a Crown. Once 9 stacks have formed, the first to crown the last remaining kind wins by "try".

Tips to win at Eto Shogi: Ryoma

1. Set up to protect the Dragon and Horse

   Losing both the Dragon and the Horse means defeat. Place them where other pieces can guard them.

2. Think about where captures stack

   A captured piece stacks onto your piece with the same kanji. Capture with an eye on which 2-stack will help you most.

3. Watch for the try win late

   Once 9 stacks have formed, the first to crown the last kind wins. Late in the game, fight over Crowns as well as the Dragon and Horse.
